“Though the days may be evil…” was part of a musical phrase I’d written. It sat on my piano for a few weeks. At the same time I had written, “Loving You, Lord, in this moment, loving You…” As I prayed and puzzled over these two very different ideas landing on my brain at the same time, I suddenly realized THEY COMPLEMENTED EACH OTHER~! It seems to me “Loving You, Lord“ is our calling – even in the midst of evil.
There’s no way I can know what you’re going through, but the news reports seems full of tragedy, grief and desperate situations. I won’t wear you out by rehearsing them here. You may be in one yourself. I have my own health struggles. It is hard for me to sing now…
But we were warned by Jesus in His own words in Matthew 24:9-12:
“Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and
you will be hated by all nations because of My name.
And at that time many will fall away and
will betray one another and hate one another.
Many false prophets will arise and will deceive many.
And because lawlessness is multiplied,
most people’s love will grow cold. LSB
Do you want to be “most people?”
I don’t. I want to develop the practices and convictions to love the Lord, no matter what. Even in Deuteronomy 13, He was raising the same issue in verses 1-5:
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you
and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true,
concerning which he spoke to you,
saying, ‘Let us walk after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them,’
you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams;
for Yahweh your God is testing you
to find out if you love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
You shall walk after Yahweh your God and fear Him; and
you shall keep His commandments,
listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.
But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death
because he has counseled rebellion against Yahweh…” LSB
The idea of loving God well, and clinging to Him, has burned itself into my soul. We must expect tests. Neither Job, nor Jesus completed all the testing for us. Peter addresses this in his first letter – 1:6b-7:
“…you have been grieved by various trials, so that the proof of your faith,
being more precious than gold which is perishable,
even though tested by fire,
may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. LSB
So, now I pray you will develop the same convictions, and find this prayer of a song helpful. I’ve sung it when I’m exulting in His intercession and provision for me. I’ve sung it with tears when I’m humbled or broken before Him.
May it bless you…
