“In my head!” the comedian replies. Phhhhft – of course.
But, have you ever noticed how we follow our eyes? Ever start to drive into the ditch because you were looking at the scenery?
Eyes on You, Lord is an attempt to help us focus on The One who desires and is able to lead us safely* through this world. The writer of the 121st Psalm put it this way:
I will lift up my eyes to the hills.
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from Yahweh,
who made heaven and earth. WEB
And the Bible goes on and describes so many different times when keeping our focus on the Lord is essential. Hebrews 12:2 is one:
“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us,
laying aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us,
let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
fixing** our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross,
despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. LSB

Bible Gateway English versions Hebrews 12:2
looking unto + keeping our eyes on + fix our eyes on + looking steadfastly on + never stop looking to +
look only to Jesus + keep our eyes fixed on
We must focus on
JESUS
What is all this “fixing our eyes” on Jesus about? Have you ever walked through a room in complete darkness while following another person? What made it so hard? We couldn’t SEE the other person.
Have you ever said, ‘keep talking so I can follow your voice’? OR “Stay close so I can put my hand on your shoulder, or let me hold on to your jacket…” In the same way, it makes sense to me to ask Jesus to keep us close and focused on Him so we don’t stray, so we don’t wander.
Most of all, though, keeping our eyes on the Lord give us the blessing of seeing Him in His glory and other perfect attributes. I think you’ll find Eyes on You, Lord an enriching addition to your worship.

*If you read my last blog about Loving You, Lord you know the idea of loving God well, and clinging to Him has burned itself into my soul. We must expect tests. I think we also need to ask the Lord to make sure we don’t mess it up and lose our focus on Him.
