You meet someone for the first time and the conversation usually starts with, “Hi, I’m ___” and names are exchanged. As relationships grow and change, we begin to observe what our acquaintance does. Sometimes actions are confusing, however. We find we need to ask for clarification. “Tell me more about yourself…” we may venture.
Something like that happened between God and Moses…
They had worked “hand in glove” in Egypt so Israel could march out of Egypt as an independent nation. My song, Do You Know This God, came from the exchange between Moses and Yahweh later at Mount Sinai. The Ten Commands had been given and Moses was wanting to KNOW what God looked like.
Then Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!”
And He said,
“I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and
I will proclaim the name of Yahweh before you; and
I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and
I will show compassion on whom I will show compassion.”
But He said,
“You cannot see My face,
for no man can see Me and live!”
Exodus 33:18-20
God decided to affirm exactly who Moses was working with… and for.
He was no one to be trifled with.
So God picked up Moses and put him in a cleft of the mountain and walked past Moses in one of the most amazing moments anyone can imagine.
As God’s glory passed by,
He covered Moses to protect him, until His glory was passed
and only His back could be seen ! ! !
Then Yahweh passed by in front of him (Moses) and called out,
“Yahweh, Yahweh God,
compassionate and gracious, slow to anger,
and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;
who keeps lovingkindness for thousands,
who forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin;
yet
He will by no means
leave the guilty unpunished…”
Exodus 34:6-7a
What kind of being can say that honestly about themselves?
Not us humans… !
And so – as I pondered these self-descriptors of our Mighty God, I thought,
“we need a song to help us ponder His Character.”
After all – what better way to remember Him, than to quote His own Words?!
